In a bad marriage friends are the invisible glue. If we have enough friends we may go on for years intending to leave talking about leaving - instead of actually getting up and leaving.
We must not however be like the leaders of the great romantic revolt who in their eagerness to get rid of the husk of convention disregarded also the humane aspiration.
