Perhaps the prevalence of pedantry may be largely accounted for by the common error of thinking that because useful knowledge should be remembered any kind of knowledge that is at all worth learning should be remembered too.
I remember when humor was gentle pokes. I used to call it 'arm around the shoulder' humor. Now they go for the jugular and they take no prisoners. It's mean mean stuff.
