The point of mythology or myth is to point to the horizon and to point back to ourselves: This is who we are this is where we came from and this is where we're going. And a lot of Western society over the last hundred years - the last 50 years really - has lost that. We have become rather aimless and wandering.

I think we need to just be very clear about what we're trying to do in Afghanistan. Frankly we're not trying to create the perfect democracy. We're never going to create some ideal society. We are simply there for our own national security.

But hey when you live in Watts you need a little smack to get by you know what I mean? You need something soft and comfortable in your life 'cause you're not going to get it from what's around you. And society isn't going to give it to you.

We are trying to construct a more inclusive society. We are going to make a country in which no one is left out.

People are going to behave however the social norms permit and beyond that.
